BMP8B as a Adipokine or Batokine is secreted by brown/beige adipocytes and enhances energy dissipation.
BMP8B is a non-invasive predictive biomarker for the diagnosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). BMP8B is expressed in mature brown adipocytes and plays a major role in the regulation of energy homeostasis by modulating brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and white adipose tissue (WAT) browning. BMP8B-deficient mice have a reduced thermogenic response and an impairment in diet- and cold-induced thermogenesis. Central administration of BMP8B induces thermogenesis and increases the core temperature, leading to weight loss.
